Tall shady pine trees, large lakes, and fishing ponds offer a scenic outdoor landscape that is enjoyed just by stepping out one’s back door.
Most prominent among the recreation areas of the county is the Georgia Veterans Memorial State Park, which offers more than 1,322 acres for camping, swimming, fishing, golfing, kayaking, canoeing, archery, disc golf, and enjoying nature. the park features its signature Military Museum with engaging indoor exhibits, as well as outdoor static displays including: a B-29A Superfortress, jets, a helicopter, tanks, landing craft and artillery.
Located on Highway 280 between Cordele and Americus, and including the beautiful Lake Blackshear, the park now boasts a convention center, along with dining, lodging, a marina, a championship 18-hole golf course, 88’s Lakeside Bar, and Cypress Grill.
In 2000 Cordele and Crisp County developed its recreation department complex complete with a gym, several special activity rooms and two full-size football fields, one of which has been dedicated in memory of long-time Recreation Department Director. This facility is located on North Fifth Street.
Also relatively new is the 78 acre baseball and softball complex at the intersection of Eighth Avenue and Pecan Street. Nine fields currently are in use and plans call for an additional five in the future.
Not only is this facility available for youth league games, bit it also allows tournament play on weekends which produces extra revenue for the county.
